Wordle Duel Strategy: Best Starting Words and Race Tips

Solving a five-letter word puzzle on your own is relaxing. Solving it while a friend races you to the same word is a completely different game. This Wordle Duel strategy guide covers the best starting words, how to use your guesses efficiently, and how to balance speed against accuracy so you finish rounds with more points than everyone else.

How Wordle Duel works

Wordle Duel takes the familiar Wordle format and makes it multiplayer for 2 to 6 players.

  • Everyone tries to find the same hidden five-letter word, with six guesses each.
  • Type a real five-letter word and press Enter. Green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different spot, and grey means the letter is not in the word.
  • Guesses must be valid words from the word list. An invalid word is rejected without using up a guess.
  • Opponents only see your colour pattern, never your letters, until the word is revealed at the end of the round.
  • A round ends when every player has either solved the word or used all six guesses.

Online, the host picks between 1 and 5 rounds before the first guess. The highest total after the last round wins, and a shared top total is a draw.

How Wordle Duel scoring works

Understanding the scoring is the key to good strategy, because it rewards both accuracy and speed.

Guesses used Base points
1 600
2 500
3 400
4 300
5 200
6 100
Not solved 0

On top of that, the first player to solve the word gets a +50 bonus, the second +25 and the third +10. The base score is calculated as (7 minus guesses used) times 100.

Look closely at those numbers. Every extra guess costs you 100 points, while finishing first instead of second is only worth an extra 25. In most situations, solving in fewer guesses matters more than solving first.

Choosing a strong starting word

Your first guess is the only one you can plan before the round begins, so it is worth getting right.

What makes a good opener

  • Five different letters. Repeating a letter wastes a slot that could test something new.
  • Common letters. Letters like E, A, R, T, S, L, N and O appear in many five-letter words.
  • A mix of vowels and consonants. Two or three vowels plus common consonants cover a lot of ground.

Words like CRANE and SLATE are popular openers for exactly these reasons. Other good options follow the same pattern, such as TRACE, STARE or LEARN. Pick one and stick with it for a while so you get used to reading its results.

Should you vary your opener?

In a race, consistency helps. When you always open with the same word, you start recognising patterns in its results, which speeds up your second guess. Changing openers every round mostly slows you down.

Using your guesses efficiently

The second guess: test new letters

If your opener gave you few hits, use your second guess to test five completely new common letters. For example, pairing a first guess like SLATE with a second guess built from letters like C, R, O, U and N covers a lot of the alphabet in two turns.

Do not reuse grey letters. Every guess that includes a letter you already know is missing is a wasted slot.

Place yellows in new positions

A yellow letter tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not in that spot. When you reuse it, move it to a position you have not tried yet. That way each guess also narrows down where it belongs.

Watch for double letters

Words like LEVEL, SPEED or GEESE trip up even experienced players because people instinctively assume five different letters. If you are stuck with few candidates left and none fit, consider whether one of your known letters appears twice.

Speed versus accuracy

This is the real skill in Wordle Duel. Because a missed guess costs 100 points and finishing first only adds up to 50, careless speed loses more than it gains.

A practical approach:

  1. Opening guesses: go fast. Your first two guesses are mostly about gathering information, so do not overthink them.
  2. Middle guesses: slow down. Once you have a few greens and yellows, take a moment to list the words that fit before typing.
  3. Last guesses: be precise. On guess five or six, a wrong answer could mean scoring nothing at all, so choose the most likely word, not the first one that comes to mind.

When to guess the answer versus fish for letters

Suppose you know four letters and there are three possible words left. Guessing one of them gives you a chance to solve immediately. Fishing with a word that tests all three missing letters guarantees a solve on the next guess.

If you are well ahead of the race and have guesses to spare, guessing a likely answer is usually fine. If you are on your fifth guess, a fishing word that guarantees the solve is often the safer choice.

Reading your opponents

Since opponents only see colour patterns, you can learn something from theirs too. If a rival's board shows lots of greens after two guesses, they are close and the speed bonus is probably gone. That is your cue to stop rushing and focus on solving in as few guesses as possible.

If everyone else is still showing mostly grey, you have time to think and a real chance at the +50 bonus.

Common Wordle Duel mistakes

  • Reusing grey letters in later guesses.
  • Putting yellow letters back in the same spot.
  • Rushing a final guess and scoring nothing.
  • Forgetting that double letters are possible.
  • Changing opening words every round and never learning their patterns.

FAQ

What is the best starting word for Wordle Duel?

Pick a word with five different common letters and a good mix of vowels, such as CRANE or SLATE. Using the same opener every round helps you read its results faster.

Can other players see my guesses in Wordle Duel?

No. Opponents and spectators only see the colours of your tiles, never the letters, until the word is revealed at the end of the round.

How is Wordle Duel scored?

Solving in one guess earns 600 points, two guesses 500, down to 100 for six. The first three solvers also get a speed bonus of 50, 25 or 10, and unsolved rounds score zero.

Is it better to solve fast or in fewer guesses?

Usually fewer guesses. Each extra guess costs 100 points, while the gap between first and second place is only 25 points.
