Chess guide
Standard chess with full FIDE rules, untimed, against a friend in your browser.
How to play Chess
- Create an Online room and share the code with a friend, or use Quick Play to find an opponent.
- White moves first, then players alternate one move at a time.
- Select a piece to see its legal moves highlighted, then select the destination square.
- Put your opponent's king in check so it has no legal escape (checkmate) to win.
- There is no clock, so take your time; you can offer a draw or resign from the game controls.
Rules
- All standard FIDE moves apply, including castling, en passant and pawn promotion.
- You may never make a move that leaves your own king in check.
- A pawn that reaches the last rank is promoted to a queen, rook, bishop or knight of your choice.
- Stalemate, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule and insufficient material are all draws.
- Games are untimed: there is no clock and no loss on time.
Tips and strategy
- In the opening, control the centre with pawns, develop knights and bishops, and castle early.
- Do not move the same piece twice in the opening without a good reason.
- Before every move, check what your opponent's last move threatens.
- Look for forks, pins and skewers: most games between club players are decided by tactics.
- In the endgame, activate your king; it becomes a strong attacking piece once the queens are off.
Questions
Is there a time limit in chess games?
No. Chess on DD Games is untimed, so each player can think as long as they like. You can still resign or offer a draw at any time.
Does castling and en passant work?
Yes. The game follows standard FIDE rules, including castling on either side, en passant captures and promotion to any piece.
When is a chess game a draw?
A game is drawn by stalemate, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, insufficient mating material, or when both players agree to a draw.
