Minefield guide
Clear every safe square without setting off a mine, then beat your best time.
How to play Minefield
- Choose a field: Easy (9×9, 10 mines), Medium (16×16, 40 mines) or Hard (16×30, 99 mines).
- Click or tap a square to dig. Your first dig is always safe and starts the timer.
- A revealed number tells you how many mines touch that square (including diagonals).
- Flag squares you are sure contain mines with right-click, or by switching to flag mode on touch devices.
- Reveal every square that is not a mine to win. Your fastest time for each difficulty is saved.
Rules
- Digging a mine ends the game immediately.
- Revealing a square with zero neighbouring mines automatically reveals the squares around it.
- Chord: tap a revealed number that already has the right number of flags around it to reveal all its other neighbours at once.
- Flags do not count toward winning; only revealing every safe square does.
Tips and strategy
- A 1 touching exactly one hidden square means that square is a mine. This single pattern solves most of the board.
- Learn the "1-2-1" and "1-2-2-1" edge patterns: the mines sit under the 2s in 1-2-1 and under the 1s in 1-2-2-1.
- Chording is the biggest time-saver: flag precisely, then tap the numbers to clear around them.
- When you must guess, prefer squares that would reveal the most new information if safe.
Questions
Can the first click in Minefield hit a mine?
No. The field is generated after your first dig, so the first square is always safe.
How do I place a flag on mobile?
Switch to flag mode with the toggle above the board, then tap any hidden square to flag or unflag it.
What does chording mean?
Tapping a revealed number whose neighbouring flags equal that number reveals all of its remaining neighbours in one move, which makes experienced play much faster.
